Explain the Block Diagram of Spectrum Analyzer - diploma to degree
What is Spectrum Analyzer?

A spectrum analyzer is an electronic device that examines and analyzes the frequency spectrum of electrical signals. It plots signal amplitude (y-axis) against frequency (x-axis), allowing engineers and academics to study signal properties like bandwidth, frequency components, harmonics, noise, and distortion.

A Spectrum Analyzer is a useful tool for assessing and measuring signal frequencies in a wide range of industries, including telecommunications, electronics, and aerospace. Its ability to detect and display frequency components is crucial for signal quality assessment, troubleshooting, and research.

Explain the Block Diagram of Spectrum Analyzer

Here is the block diagram of the spectrum analyzer -

  • The RF Input Attenuator: The RF Input Attenuator is the spectrum analyzer's first step, adjusting the strength of the input signal prior to processing. When dealing with high-power signals, attenuation is required to keep the mixer and other internal components from overloading. It ensures that the input signal stays within the analyzer's dynamic range, which reduces distortion and measurement errors. The attenuator is typically composed of resistive elements that can be adjusted manually or automatically in response to signal strength.
  • Mixer: The mixer is a crucial component that converts the incoming RF signal to an intermediate frequency (IF) for further processing. It accomplishes this by mixing the incoming signal and the signal generated by the Local Oscillator (LO). This technique, known as heterodyning, converts the frequency of the incoming signal to a predetermined IF, making it easier to analyze. The mixer generates sum and difference frequencies, and the appropriate IF component is selected for further filtering. The mixer's performance influences the spectrum analyzer's accuracy and sensitivity.
