What is FM Receiver?

Frequency Modulation (FM) Receiver is an electrical system or device that detects, demodulates, and converts frequency-modulated radio signals into audio or data signals that humans can understand. It works by capturing electromagnetic waves with an antenna, isolating a specific frequency with a tuning circuit, and then recovering the original information—usually sound—from the modulated carrier wave via a demodulation process. FM receivers are widely employed in a number of communication systems, including commercial radio broadcasting, two-way radios, wireless microphones, and public address systems, due to their superior sound quality and noise resistance than amplitude modulation (AM) systems.

Here is the Block Diagram of a FM Receiver with Explanation -

  • Antenna: The antenna collects frequency modulated (FM) radio waves from the air. These transmissions are often quite feeble, with frequencies ranging from 88 MHz to 108 MHz. The antenna converts electromagnetic waves into electrical impulses, typically in the range of a few microvolts (μV), shown as 2 μV in the diagram.
  • RF Amplifier: The RF (Radio Frequency) amplifier enhances the weak FM signals detected by the antenna. It ensures that the target signal is strong enough for further processing while reducing the impact of unwanted noise. In this diagram, the RF amplifier output is increased to roughly 200 μV.
