What is a Relay Module for Arduino?

A relay module is an electrical component that acts as a switch, allowing low-power signals (such as those generated by a microcontroller) to control high-voltage or high-current devices like lights, motors, and domestic appliances. It acts as a bridge between logic-level electronics and electrical devices that require higher voltage or current to function.

Important Function of Relay Module

A relay module serves two basic functions: electrical isolation and switching control. When a little input voltage (often 5V or 3.3V) is provided to the module, an electromagnetic coil within the relay activates, causing an internal switch to open or close. This approach enables:

  • High-voltage devices can be turned on and off using a low-voltage control signal.
  • Protecting the regulating circuit from electrical spikes and overload.
